caribbean Picnic

Project #11

Caribbean Picnic is an exploration of how structure, color, spacing, and high contrast between warp and weft can create fabulous gradients that can be pushed to iridescence.

For rigid-heddle looms, the project is woven in a plain weave, doubling warp threads and using a single thread for weft. Four and eight-shaft weavers will be working in a straight draw twill with the option of some small and wonderful variations in tie-ups and treadling.

Our project is picnic napkins plus a utensil roll. The fabric for the roll utilizes thin stripes strategically placed to outline compartments, and define fold and sew lines. The tie is added into the fabric while it is still on the loom.
