Ferdinand’s Folly

Project #12

Silk/Alpaca Scarves

The Yarn

Malabrigo Silkpaca

70% baby alpaca, 30% silk. Soft and luscious, and the colors glow.

The Colors

Choose one warp color and two weft colors

This kit is an exploration of some of the amazing things that are possible with beautiful, hand-dyed yarn.

By keeping the structure and color combinations fairly simple, the yarn is given the space to shine.

The patterns include tips and tricks for working with Silkpaca.

Cantabrico Warp

Tuareg, Fuscia, or Sapphire weft

Carnival Warp

Sunset, Bobby Blue, Sapphire, or Pagoda Weft

This kit takes us on a detour by introducing a new yarn, Malabrigo Silkpaca.

It includes four skeins of yarn, two for warp and two for weft. You can make two smaller scarves (7” x 54” each) or one larger scarf (9” x 72”). If you want to make two large scarves, order an extra skein of your warp color.

I have woven many warps out of Silkpaca and I have come to believe that less is more. The yarn is glorious that there isn't much I have found that enhances, rather than detracts from it.

Four and eight shaft patterns are combined. You can choose to weave this in plain weave, or you can add in a bit of huck lace.

The rigid heddle pattern gives the option of using warp and weft doubled in a 12-dent heddle, or using two 10-dent heddles for a finer cloth (instructions included).

The pattern includes information about how to handle wool, fulling, felting, and wet finishing, hemstitching, techniques for lightening up on your beat, and the differences between knitting yarn and weaving yarn.
