Choosing Accessories
Vermont Weaving Supplies is a dealer for Schacht, Harrisville, Leclerc, and Glimakra weaving yarns, supplies, and looms. We carry a carefully curated selection of weaving accessories that are well made and easy to use.
Rigid Heddle Loom Accessories
The rigid heddle looms that we carry come with everything that you need to start weaving. Other accessories to consider when purchasing a rigid heddle loom include:
Extra Reeds
To be able to weave different weight yarns. Eventually, you will want an 8, 10, and 12 reed.
Extra Shuttles
Your loom comes with two stick shuttles that are as long as the weaving width of your loom. If you are purchasing a loom that is wider than 20”, for narrower projects it is easier to weave with a shorter shuttle.
Pick-Up Sticks
Pick-up sticks are used when weaving patterns or lace.
Stand
The rigid heddle loom can easily be clamped to a table (clamps included). Stands provide a more comfortable weaving experience.
Carry Bag
Carry bags are constructed to fit your loom perfectly. It is a great thing to have if you are planning on traveling with your loom.
Floor (Shaft) Loom Accessories
The following accessories are necessary for most weavers with floor looms. Plan on spending around $300 for high-quality basics, not including extra reeds.
Shuttle
In general, for floor loom weaving, you will want at least one boat shuttle. Personally I prefer the Leclerc 11" shuttle because its shape works well for the method I use to throw and catch.
Extra Bobbins
I suggest a package of 12 bobbins to start.
Warping Board or Reel
These are used to measure your warp threads when preparing them to go on the loom.
A warping board is less expensive, takes up less space, and has a smaller learning curve.
A warping reel is more ergonomic, and can generally accommodate longer warps.
Bobbin Winder
Bobbin winders are essential.
Start with a manual since it is easier to control the thread. We carry the Harrisville due to its price point. Schacht winders can be special ordered.
If you do a lot of bobbin winding, consider investing in an electric winder. Having tight, well-wound bobbins makes the weaving process easier and more pleasant.
Threading Hook
Many looms come with a threading hook. I like using the same one to thread both my reed and heddles.
Reeds
Floor looms generally come with one reed.
If your budget allows, I highly recommend purchasing two additional reeds when you order your loom so you have an 8, 10, and 12 dent.
