Weaving a Scarf with Malabrigo Knit-a-Long Yarn

Starting April 1, Malabrigo is hosting a knit-a-long for the Temperance Shawl. To celebrate, I am offering 20% off the three skein sock kits.

Not a knitter? Would you rather be weaving? Those three skeins can also make a beautiful shawl on your rigid heddle, or floor loom.

Here is the math for yardage:

For Warp:

For Rigid Heddle Loom:

Width of Warp: 20” wide, 12 ends per inch, 240 ends total

Length of Warp: For an 80” long scarf (this is the measurement on the loom, it will be 70-75” when it is removed from the loom), add 18” for loom waste (includes the fringe) and 8” take up. Length of warp equals 3 yds.

Yardage Needed for Warp: 240 ends times 3 yds equals 720 yds total for warp.

For Weft: for each inch of weaving you will use 20” per pick times 12 picks per inch of yarn (240”). Multiply by 80 to get the amount needed for the entire shawl…19,200”. Divide by 36 to get yards. 19,200 divided by 36 equals 533 yds.

Total yarn needed for warp and weft together:

Rigid Heddle Loom: 720 plus 533 equals 1253 yds total

For Floor Loom:

You will need some extra loom waste on a floor loom so I recommend a warp length of 3.5 yds. Because of this extra, you will need to make your shawl a little narrower or shorter to make sure you have enough yarn.

Width of Warp: 19” wide, 12 ends per inch, 228 ends total

Length of Warp: because of added loom waste, I recommend a warp length of 3.5 yds.

Yardage Needed for Warp: 228 ends times 3.5 yds equals 798 yds total for warp

For Weft: for each inch of weaving you will use 19” per pick times 12 picks per inch of yarn (228”). Multiply by 80 to get the amount needed for the entire shawl…18,240”. Divide by 36 to get yards. 18,240 divided by 36 equals 507 yds.

Total yarn needed for warp and weft together:

Floor Loom: 798 plus 507 equals 1305yds total

Each skein of Malabrigo Sock has 440yds. Three skeins gives you 440 x 3 equals 1320 yds.

You will want to use the numbers above to decide on a stripe sequence for warp and weft. Your weft can be mostly one color, with some small stripes.
